Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes organized a birthday party to celebrate the first birthday of their daughter Surie.At Cruise compound in Los Angeles the entire family dined on pizza and cupcakes. “Suri is walking and talking,” says a source close to the family. “Tom and Suri kicked the ball around the lawn during the party.”

According to People, Holmes’s mom Kathy, 60, flew to California for the occasion, as did a sister and nephew of Cruise. On April 17, both grandmothers – Kathy Holmes and Mary Lee Mapother South, 70 –were treated to dinner at an Italian restaurant.

Actress Jenna Elfman has dismissed rumours Tom Cruise's marriage to Katie Holmes is in trouble.Reports are claiming the Batman Begins actress is being forced to adopt Cruise's spiritual beliefs and is being kept in a "prison-like" environment.

But fellow Scientologist Elfman rubbishes the claims as nonsense, she says, "It's so absolutely not that. It's hard to give a detailed explanation on something that's simple.

"Honestly, do you have a great boyfriend or girlfriend? It's not a big deal, right? You have fun hanging out, and you like talking and sharing your ideas. It's exciting. That's their relationship."Elfman attended the couple's star-studded November (06) wedding in Italy.

Tom Cruise has ordered wife Katie Holmes to take Scientology-endorsed parenting classes, adding to fears that the 'Dawson's Creek' actress is being shut out from the "normal" world.
The news comes after reports last week that Holmes was thinking about returning to Catholicism."Katie was quite offended by that," a source told Us magazine, referring to Cruise's parental orders. "Can you imagine when you're 28 and have your first child to be told you need to go to this church to become a better mom?"Accounts suggest that Holmes is surrounded by fellow Scientologists, including a 'minder' whose job it is to make sure Katie doesn't say anything negative about Scientology in interviews.The source added: "Everyone who works with Tom is technically minding Katie."

Not that this is anything new, but apparently Katie Holmes' friends continue to worry about her. They say Tom is "meddling, controlling and won't let her out of his sight."And it looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Tom's mother is also always on Katie's case, chiming in on what she's wearing with, "Isn't that too revealing for a wife and mother?" She reportedly watches what Katie feeds Suri, makes sure Katie doesn't eat anything good, saying nobody loves a fat wife, and tattles everything back to Tom.

Since Katie started filming her new flick, Mad Money, Tom and his mom are around 24/7. Star rag says Tom didn't like the location of the company's opening party, then he didn't like the people invited, then he didn't like sitting with others, then he didn't like dining without his own personal entourage, then he didn't like going at all. Remember my Sleeping With the Enemy reference? Tom's probably organizing the canned goods as we speak.

Actor Tom Cruise hosted a $6,250-per ticket fund-raiser in Manhattan for a project to help police, fire fighters and paramedics who suffered health problems following the 9/11 terror attacks.The 'New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project', held Thursday night, is a Scientology-based 'detoxification' programme and relies on heavy doses of vitamins and hours in a sauna, www.Hollywood.tv has learnt.Cruise issued a statement before the event defending the programme, which critics say is nothing more than 'medical hocus-pocus', according to a story in the New York Post.'This project has demonstrated that recovery is not only possible, but an incontrovertible fact,' Cruise said in the statement.More than 780 rescue workers have reportedly accepted treatment under the programme, for which the city got hundreds of thousands of dollars in aid.However, on Wednesday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg denounced the programme, asserting that Scientology is 'not science, and we should only fund those programmes that reputable scientists believe will stand the light of day'.
